Who is a true Believer?

[قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ - الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى صَلاَتِهِمْ خَـشِعُونَ - وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُّعْرِضُونَ - وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِلزَّكَـوةِ فَـعِلُونَ - وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـفِظُونَ - إِلاَّ عَلَى أَزْوَجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ - فَمَنِ ابْتَغَى وَرَآءَ ذلِكَ فَأُوْلَـئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ - وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لاًّمَـنَـتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَعُونَ ] وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَى صَلَوتِهِمْ يُحَـفِظُونَ- أُوْلَـئِكَ هُمُ الْورِثُونَ- الَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ الْفِرْدَوْسَ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـلِدُونَ-] (1. Successful indeed are the believers.) (2. Those who with their Salah are Khashi`un.) (3. And those who turn away from Al-Laghw.) (4. And those who pay the Zakah.) (5. And those who guard their private parts.) (6. Except from their wives or their right hand possessions, for then, they are free from blame.) (7. But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors.) (8. Those who are faithfully true to their Amanat and to their covenants are Ra`un.) (9. And those who strictly guard their Salawat.) (10. These are indeed the heirs. ) (11. Who shall inherit Firdaws. They shall dwell therein forever.)

Embracing Islaam and (then) Following a Deviant Sect Q. Noble Shaykh, there are a lot of Christians who accept Islaam and then end up following a methodology other than the methodology of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa'ah, such as the Sufeeyah and Shee'ah. Are they considered to be disbelievers due to following a methodology other than that of Ahlus Sunnah and the Salafus Saalih, or do we judge them according to the sect they follow? Answer: If a non-Muslim embraces Islaam, affiliates himself to it and then joins an innovated sect, he then takes the ruling of that sect. If he involves himself in innovations that are within themselves a form of disbelief, he is considered to be a disbeliever and his conversion from Christianity to this innovation would not have benefited him. If these innovations do not lead to disbelief then he is not considered to be a disbeliever. However Ahlus Sunnah should search for and properly receive those who embrace Islaam on their own. Because it is extremely likely that they accepted Islaam due to their own desire, and then an innovator approaches them and harms them by saying: "This innovation is a part of Islaam" and so they practice it. Woe to me! If only I had never taken so-and-so as a friend! He indeed led me astray from the Reminder after it had come to me!"} [al-Furqan; 28-29] 2 - The Messenger of Allah said: "A person is upon the way of his friend. So, let one of you look to whom he keeps as a friend. " ['Sahih al-Jami'' (3545) and 'as-Silsilah as-Sahihah' (927)] 3 - 'Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hambal said: "My father went out to Tarsus on foot, and he perfored two or three Hajjs on foot, and he was the most patient of people upon being alone. " ['Tarjamat al-Imam Ahmad'; p. 18] 4 - Ibn al-Qayyim said: "Know that the greatest of losses is for you to be preoccupied with one who will bring you nothing but a loss in your time with Allah - the Mighty and Majestic - and being cut off from Him, a wasting your time with the person, a weakening of your energy, and the dispersing of your resolve. So, if you are tested with this - and you must be tested with this - deal with him according to how Allah would wish, and be patient with him as much as possible. Get closer to Allah and His Pleasure by way of this person, and make your getting together with him something to benefit from, not something to incur a loss from. Be with him as if you are a man who is on a road who was stopped by another man, who then asks you to take him on your journey. Make sure that you are the one who gives him a ride, and that he is not the one giving you the ride. If he refuses, and there is nothing to gain from travelling with him, do not stop for him, bid him farewell, and do not even turn back to look at him, as he is a highway robber, regardless of who he really is. So, save your heart, be wary of how you spend your days and nights, and do not let the Sun set before you arrive at your destination. " ['al-Wabil as-Sayyib'; p. 45] 5 - Ibn Jama'ah said: "So, it is upon the student of knowledge to abandon socialization, as abandoning it is from the most important things that the student of knowledge must do - let alone with members of the opposite gender - especially with those who spend most of their time in play, and spend little of their time in thought, as the nature of individuals can rob you. The harms of socialization include the passing of life without any benefit, as well as the decline of wealth and religious practice, if this socialization were to occur with the wrong people. The student of knowledge should not mix except with either those who he can benefit, or can benefit from. And if he is offered the friendship of one who will waste his time with him, will not benefit him, will not benefit from him, and will not assist him in reaching his objective, he should politely end the relationship from the start before it progresses to something deeper, as when something becomes established, it becomes more difficult to change it. There is a phrase that is constantly on the tongues of the Fuqaha': 'Repelling something is easier than removing it. ' So, if he requires someone to befriend, let that person be righteous, religious, pious, wary, intelligent, full of benefit, having little evil, good at complying, rarely conflicting, reminding him if he forgets, cooperating with him when he is reminded, helpful if he is in need, and comforting if he is in distress. " ['Tadhkirat as-Sami' wal-Mutakallim'; p. 83] 6 - Ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi said: "Know that not everyone is suitable to be your friend. You must verify that this potential friend has the neccessary characteristics that make friendship with him something to be desired. The one you seek to befriend must have five characteristics: He must be intelligent, as there is no good in befriending an idiot, as he will only harm you when he wants to benefit you. By intelligent, we mean one who understands things as they are, either on his own, or if they are explained to him; He must have good manners, and this is a must. One who is simply intelligent might be overcome by anger or desire, and obey his desire. Thus, there would be no benefit in befriending him; He must not be a fasiq, as such a person would not fear Allah, and whoever does not fear Allah cannot be trusted; He must not be an innovator, as his abundance of innovation is feared from befriending him; He should not be eager for the dunya. " ['Mukhtasar Minhaj al-Qasidin'; p. 126-132] May Allah grant us beneficial knowledge.

Ten Examples of the Haya' of the Salaf 1 - Abu Musa al-Ash'ari: Anas bin Malik said: "When Abu Musa would sleep, he would wear a small over garment, fearing that his 'awrah would be exposed." ['Siyar A'lam an-Nubala''; 2/399] 2 - Ibn 'Abbas: "He would not enter the bathroom except that he was alone, and would be wearing a thick outer garment, saying: "I am shy from Allah Seeing me in the bathroom without any clothing."" ['Siyar A'lam an-Nubala''; 3/355] 3 - 'A'ishah: "I used to enter the building in which the Messenger of Allah and my father were buried while I was dressed lightly, saying: 'These are just my husband and father.' However, when 'Umar was buried, by Allah, I never entered this building except that my clothing was wrapped tightly around my body, out of shyness from 'Umar." [al-Hakim's 'Mustadrak' (4/7), and he declared it authentic] 4 - Hisham bin 'Ammar: Mu'awiyah bin Aws narrated: "I saw Hisham bin 'Ammar, and when he would walk in the street, he would look down to the ground, and he would never raise his head to the sky, out of shyness from Allah - the Mighty and Majestic." ['Siyar A'lam an-Nubala''; 11/430] 5 - al-Humaydi: "Abu Bakr bin Maymun came and knocked on the door of al-Humaydi, and assumed that he was given permission to enter. So, he entered, finding al-Humaydi with his thigh exposed. al-Humaydi began to cry, saying: "By Allah, you have just laid your eyes on something that nobody has seen since I have reached adulthood!"" ['Siyar A'lam an-Nubala''; 19/122] 6 - Muhammad bin Yahya adh-Dhuhli: Abu al-'Abbas al-Azhari said: "I heard the servant of Muhammad bin Yahya adh-Dhuhli saying, while he was being washed: "I served him for thirty years, and I would give him his water, and I never even saw his leg, and I was his property."" ['Siyar A'lam an-Nubala''; 12/279] 7 - al-Imam al-Bukhari: Muhammad bin Abi Hatim narrated: "Some of my companions said to me: "We were at the house of Muhammad bin Salam, and Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari entered upon his upon his return from Iraq. So, he began to inform us of the tribulation that the people were being put through, as well as what had happened to Ahmad bin Hambal, etc. When al-Imam al-Bukhari exited the house, Muhammad bin Salam said to those present: "Have you ever seen a virgin with as much shyness as this man?"" ['Siyar A'lam an-Nubala''; 12/418] 8 - Ibn al-Qayyim narrated that some of the Salaf said: "If one does something in secret that he is shy from doing in public, this means that he means nothing to himself." ['Madarij as-Salikin'; 2/353] 9 - Shams ad-Din al-Maqdisi: "If my leg becomes exposed while I am alone, I rush to cover it up while making istighfar." ['al-Mukhtar al-Masun min A'lam al-Qurun'; 1/540] 10 - Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Ghumari: He would refuse to fall asleep in the presence of anyone, saying: "I fear that some bad smell would emanate from me while I am sleeping."

Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported: “I heard the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, saying: “A person utters a word thoughtlessly (i.e., without thinking about whether it is good or evil) and as a result, will plummet into the fire of Hell deeper than the distance between the east and the west.” [Al-Bukhaari & Muslim]

Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “A man may utter a word pleasing to Allaah without considering it of any significance, but for which Allaah elevates his ranks (in Paradise); another one may speak a word displeasing to Allaah without considering it of any importance, but for which he would be plummeted into Hell.” [Al-Bukhaari]

Abu ‘Abdur-Rahmaan Bilaal bin Al-Haarith Al-Muzani, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “A man may speak a good word without knowing its worth, for which Allaah records for him His good pleasure until the Day he will meet Him; another man may utter an evil word without realising its importance, for which Allaah records for him His displeasure until the Day he will meet Him.” [Maalik & At-Tirmithi]

When the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was talking to Mu’aath, may Allaah be pleased with him, he told him: “The root (i.e. foundation) of this matter is Islaam, its pillar (mainstay) is the prayer and its apex is Jihaad (fighting in the cause of Allaah).” Then he sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam asked: “Shall I tell you of that which holds together all these things?” Mu’aath, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allaah!” So he sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam held his tongue between his fingers, and said: “Restrain this.” Mu’aath, may Allaah be pleased with him, asked: “O Messenger of Allaah! Will we really be held to account for what we say?” The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam exclaimed: “May your mother lose you! Most people will be thrown on their faces into the Hellfire on account of their tongues.” [Ahmad & At-Tirmithi]

Ibn Mas’ood, may Allaah be pleased with him: “That which requires imprisonment the most is one’s tongue.”

`Adiyy bin Haatim, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam as saying: “Allaah will surely speak to every one of you without an interpreter. He (i.e., the one being spoken to) will look to his right and see nothing but (deeds) which he had done, and will look to his left and see nothing but (deeds) which he had done. Then he will look in front of him and will find nothing except the Hellfire facing him. So protect (yourselves) from the Fire, even if by giving in charity half a date, and if you cannot find that, then with a kind word.” [Al-Bukhaari & Muslim]

'Uthman ibn 'Affan (radiAllahu anhu) said, "Worrying about the dunya is a darkness in the heart, while worrying about the akhirah is a light in the heart."
